014 Spiderman in eathquake: True story from our childhood

Snow clad mountains were glittering in bright Sun. Blue sky was not having any clouds and wind wasn’t blowing. That day’s bright sun was rare in winters.

Along with study, teacher and students were basking in the sunshine by having classes in playground of school. Children were sitting on ground in the green grass in front of blackboards kept on tripods and teachers in wooden chair. Most of the children were in school uniform- khaki pants, sky blue shirt and royal indigo woollen sweater. Everyone enjoyed the warmth amid cold weather.

Students of higher classes who were to appear in board examinations were having classes inside their class rooms. Class rooms were in a raw connected by a veranda. It was a two-story building made of stone cut into brick shape with slanted tin roof. Stair case and veranda had 4 feet high wooden railing and entire building had wooden flooring. Some used to say that school building was made in pre independence era.

Sanju and Bholu were in classes being held in the playground. Instead of listening to geography teacher, Sanju was day dreaming about becoming a super star. Bholu was getting bored in English language class and was sincerely waiting for classes to end so that he can play cricket.

Pappu was inside the first-floor classroom trying to understand complex mathematics equations which he never liked. Teacher asked a question in the class. Students who didn’t know the answer looked down and the ones who knew looked up. Teacher threw a chock at Pappu and asked him to answer. Pappu stood up reluctantly and before he could open his mouth – windows and doors swinged, while pictures fell of the wall and chairs moved.

It was an earthquake.

Everyone ran outside. There was a crowd crush at the stair case. In the melee, one student jumped off the veranda railing from first floor. He landed on the ground with his foot, sat down and revolved thrice before coming to stop and becoming unconscious.

Crowd made a circle around him as everyone came to see him. Sanu and Bholu thought it was their brother Pappu and started crying. They were trying to see his face from the outer circle as elder kids and teachers were in inner circle. They forced their way in crowd to come close to injured student, they saw some students were trying to help him and one of them gave him a friendly slap. Slap brought him back to consciousness; he stood up as fast as earthquake. He was unscathed and was not Pappu.

Pappu kept his hand on Sanju and Bholu’s back from behind and asked what happened to them. Both of them happily hugged Pappu with tears in eyes.

There was another crowd to get autograph of that lucky spiderman child. They ensured to take it before walking back home together.

013: The Thermometer and inquisitiveness : True story from our childhood

013: why Fahrenheit?

The Thermometer and inquisitiveness

Along with their parents, Pappu, Sanju and Bholu were living in a small town of Uttarakhand.

Due to extreme cold weather, Mother caught cough, cold and fever. Fever cured in a few days. It was then Pappu who fell sick. When Pappu recovered Sanju fell sick and when Sanju recovered Bholu fell sick. Bholu didn’t recover in few days.

Father was consulting doctor in primary health center for medicines. Doctor asked him to note down temperature of Bholu every morning and evening. He said if fever doesn’t go in next 3 days, a blood test would be required. Father went to a medicine shop and brought a thermometer.

Sanju looked at Thermometer with utmost curiosity. There was a bulb like shape at the bottom which had silver colour liquid filled in it. Bulb was connected with a tube which had a scale like marking on it. Instead of Centimetres, marking had Fahrenheit written on it. Scale didn’t start with zero but with 94 and went up-to 108. Sanju asked Father why this scale starts with 94 instead of zero. Pappu answered that body temperature was measured in Fahrenheit not in Centimetres. Pappu laughed at Sanju and told him that Sanju knew nothing. Pappu teased Sanju by calling him dumb and Sanju hit back with his books. Mother came before Pappu could hit him back and said he will hit him back tomorrow. Mother asked Father to teach them how to take body temperature and Father demoed it to all of them.

After Bholu’s temperature, they measured temperature for everyone. They pulled out pages from their school notebook and glued one page for every member next to the calendar on wall. They wrote temperature along with date and time on those pages with sketch pen.

Next morning, rays of sun came inside the room from windows. Father woke Sanju up and gave tea in the bed. Except eyes, nose and mouth, Sanju covered himself fully with quilt and sat on the bed with folded legs. With his right hand out from the front opening of the quilt, he took the first sip of tea. With strong taste in his tongue, tea passed down through oesophagus and an idea moved up in his mind. Idea could prove to Pappu that he wasn’t dumb. He kept the cup on the table next to bed and walked to Almirah along with quilt. He got the thermometer and came back to bed in the earlier condition. He then had cup of tea in his left hand and thermometer in right. He thought in his mind that he would prove to Pappu that he was the smartest fellow who can measure temperature of the warm tea.

He put thermometer into the tea.

Before he could take the readings, the bulb of the thermometer broke due to very high temperature of the tea. Silver colour mercury floated in the cup and Sanju was left with empty tube of broken thermometer in his hand.

Pappu saw it happily, called Father and …

012: Black magic in 'Angithi' : True story from our childhood

012: Black magic in 'Angithi' : True story from our childhood

School closed early due to bad weather. While coming back from school, kids could not see Himalayan mountains and sun, as they were eclipsed by dark clouds. Freezing wind was blowing slowly and kids were numbing in their woollen sweaters, jackets, caps, mufflers and hand gloves.

Father also came early from the office. He lit the kerosene lamp and a coal ‘angithi’ in the living room. Kids and Father sat around it to warm themselves. Kids opened their homework, Father cleared office files and Mother cooked food in Kitchen.

Mother came in between and said that she heard on radio that snow would fall that night. Kids were excited to see the snow fall. Bholu said that if that happens in the day he would eat snow with Jaggery. Pappu snubbed him saying that he will fall ill like last year. Sanju said that he will throw snowballs on them and play. Father enjoyed their conversation but asked them to pay attention to studies then and play when snow falls.

After a while Mother called them for food in Kitchen. Father said that it was too cold so suggested bringing food to the living room so that can have food in the warmth of ‘Angithi’.

Father went to help her and both of them brought food and utensils to the living room. Kids kept their books and office files to sides, and father opened the radio. ‘Vividh Bharti’ was playing bollywood songs. Mother closed the door while bringing the jug of water and glasses.

They were eating their food and listening to songs. Songs were so enchanting that all just immersed themselves into the radio. Slowly they stopped talking to each other. Their eating speed slowed down and the radio kept playing the next songs and then started the 9 PM news.

This was beyond normal.  All of them felt dizzy. Kids started getting sleepy.

Mother felt that the kids were tired and slept because of melodious songs on the radio. She wanted to take them to bed but was left with no energy. She wanted to tell father to help her but voice didn’t come out of her mouth.

Father saw Bholu trying to sleep on his plate, Sanju on the left and Pappu on the right side of the plate.

He could see all his family getting into some spell of black magic. He was trying to understand, make sense of things happening in the last few minutes but he himself felt helpless.

He saw Mother leaning on Angithi and murmuring “Maata save us”

Fearing that mother’s ‘Saari’ would catch fire, with the help of an invisible feeble energy, Father stood up and walked out of the drawing room.

He went to the bathroom; washed his hands and face with cold water. After taking a few deep breaths in the varanda he then came back to see his kids and wife in the drawing room and opened all the windows and doors.

Chilling wind entered the room as father took Bholu out to the varanda. Behind him, mother brought Sanju and Pappu came out on his own.

Spell of black magic was carbon monoxide poisoning which had claimed the lives of a family in a nearby village a few weeks ago.

A divine energy in the form of father’s presence of mind saved them all.

011 Kerosene Lamp Glass : True story from our childhood

011 Kerosene Lamp Glass : True story from our childhood

011 happy without a reason : True story from our childhood

Pappu, Sanju and Bholu lived in Gopeshwar town of Uttarakhand in mid 1980s when television started coming to Indian homes. Surrounded by Himalayan mountains, town had market on one side of the hill and government offices plus residential buildings on the other.

One evening, kids were watching ‘Chitrahaar’, a 30 minutes Bollywood song collection in television. The song from ‘Chori Chori’ movie was on:

Panchhi banoo udti phiroon mast gagan mein

Aaj main azad hoon duniya ke chaman mein

Hillori hillori hillo hillo hillo hillori

Power went off in the middle of song. Power cut was usual in those days, Kids cursed the government not for the power cut but for the timing. Mother lit the flat wick kerosene lamp on the table. Kids sat around it to study. She observed a big crack in glass chimney of the lamp and told kids that whoever goes to market next shall bring a chimney.

Song was so enchanting that Sanju kept humming the song instead of reading the book opened in front of him.

Next evening, Sanju was feeling elated, he went for a walk to market. It was customary to go the temple which was located at the one end of market, bow to Gopeshwar Mahadev and then come back. After bowing down he bought a glass chimney and kept it in the jute bag which he had carried from home.

He was still humming the song.

And in the middle of the path, whenever there was no one else around, he was imitating Nargis and Raj Kapoor while dancing.

It was late spring. Tulip were blooming in the gardens. Sanju was feeling light without the burden of heavy winter cloths. He was ready to fly out of city surrounded by mountains in half sweater. He was happy without any reason.

He ran upwards on foot path stairs which were connecting the zig-zag motor road. After reaching the motor road he was exhausted and sat on the parapet. He watched the spectacular red sun setting in the mountains and day dreamed singing and dancing the same song along with a beautiful girl.

After the sun was fully set, he started toward home and reached his house’s front door. Door was already opened. Sanju went in dancing his hands swinging from left to right.

His bag hit the door and the glass chimney broke into pieces.

010 Flight to Moon in 1980s: True story from our childhood

Flight to Moon in 1980s: True story from our childhood

Their full pants and woollen sweaters were getting dirty in mud. They knew that their mother will scold them but the joy of playing in the road so high that they hardly cared about it. Their cheeks were started getting winter rash as the temperature started going further down to extreme. Diwali was few weeks away.

Shop near school started selling fireworks. While coming back home. Pappu used some of his saving from piggy bank to buy crackers from shop. Pappu had come to play football with firecrackers in his packet. They were joined by a kid named Hari from another village who had come in the vicinity temporary. He was little older than Pappu.

After an exhausting match of kicking the ball from one bend to another bend in the road, Pappu brought out few red colour ‘murga chhap’ crackers. Hari laughed at him saying these small crackers don’t even make enough noise to make a mouse run. Pappu knew that his crackers are small so he put them back to his pocket.

Next day, while coming back from school, Pappu brought a green color ‘sutli’ bomb. In the evening, he came prepared with a page torn from his mathematics notebook, ‘chaavi’ brand match box and the bomb. He was sure of dazzling Hari with the blast. He put the page on the road, and few stones on paper so that paper didn’t go way with the wind. He opened the red paper tape of the bomb and then straightened the fuse string of cracker. He kept the bomb string one side of the page and then lite the fire on other side of page. They ran as the fire approached the string of cracker. There was a huge sound. Bholu started crying out of fear.

Hari was still not impressed and laughed at them. He said it was nothing. Pappu was very irritated and went on to hit Hari with his hands. Hari fought back and both of them has a small friendly brawl. Pappu told Hari that he has got nothing but the boasting a white lie. Hari overpowered Pappu and said he will show them tomorrow. His bomb will not only make a huge blast but also send an object to the moon. They knew from school and radio that an Indian named Rakesh Sharma travelled in space recently. Pappu showed Hari a downward thumb and all three of them teased him with their tongues out.

Next day, Hari came with a bigger ‘sutli’ bomb and an empty 1 litre Tin jar. He didn’t bring the page of his notebook and said that he will lite the bomb directly. He kept the bomb on ground and with the help of a small stone he kept the Jar upside down on top of bomb. Pappu and Bholu stood at a distance. Sanju went along with Hari. Hari lite the bomb directly on string. As the string caught fire, both the them ran away. Bholu closed his eyes and ears.

 There was a deafening sound.

Pappu saw in awe - Jar flying towards moon in two pieces.

First peace went up the sky and disappeared. Second piece took a flight down. It landed on the back of Hari. Who fell down on his stomach due to the impact. Tin pierced through his woollen sweater. Pappu gave him a hand and he sat down. He removed sweater, shirt and vest one by one. There was blood and small wound in his back. They rubbed mud on his back and he then wore back the cloths.

They promised not to tell anyone about both - neither the half which landed on Hari’s back nor the half which went in the outer sky towards moon.

009 The Lockdown in 1980's: True story from our childhood

The Lockdown in 1980's: True story from our childhood

Kids saw a man walking toward their home along with a gun hanging in his shoulder. They ran to their father and said “Papa, Papa, Gun! Gun! one man is coming with a gun”

Father was surprised. The whole region was so peaceful that he never heard of any violence even with lathis leave the gun.

He came out to see.

He was relaxed to see his acquittance coming. Man was an ex-service man who was also the village head from a nearby village,

They exchanged pleasantries and sat for chit chat. As he sipped the tea, he said that he was asked by forest department to help capture the tiger which turned man eater recently.

A month ago, Bholu had little fever and father had to go to nearby village for some inspection of development work. Mother asked father to come next day in case it gets late. Since father was not home, kids did not study but played their favourite train game. Right after dinner there was knock on the door. It was father. Mother was angry on him on why he walked in such a dark night. He said that he was worried about Bholu so he came back in the night itself.

Next day, they heard that two people were killed by tiger on the same route where their father walked on the same night. Mother thanked God for saving her husband. But she became hysterical from that day onwards. Father started walking kids to school and then used to go bring them back on foot. Their home was a lonely house so they were in greater danger than others. Kids stopped playing on the road and on their front yard right at sunset. They used to close all their door and stay inside from sunset. It was difficult for kids to stay inside home. They were feeling imprisoned for no fault of theirs.

They played ludo, carrom and snake ladder in the light of kerosene lamp all evenings. They had a philips radio that was their only way to know things happening in other parts of country. Frustration of always being inside was taking a toll on family's atmosphere. Kids started fighting each other over ludo moves. Mother and father started quarrelling over small things such as amount of salt in food. Tiger had become a nightmare for them. Kids were not able to sleep and were getting up in mid-night and were crying out of fear.

They were longing for tiger problem to end so that they can have their life back.

This man with a gun gave them hope.

Kids thought that he will kill the tiger and will bring back the days of freedom and joyful play. He was treated like a saviour. He was given best food their mother could make. And then he started off to jungle as they bid him good luck.

Next day one person came from village and told that the Hunter was in hospital. He encountered the tiger but his bullet missed the tiger. Instead, tiger injured him badly. Kids started crying as their freedom did not come back.

After few weeks, the talk of tiger attacking humans slowed in frequency and in few months the talk fully disappeared.

Tiger seemed to have died a natural death.

As the tiger incidents faded away, kids came to back living their life full of cheer and excitement.

008 The First motorcycle: True story from our childhood

The First motorcycle: True story from our childhood

Kids were playing football in road, when they saw a man riding the motorcycle. Motorcycle came with roaring sound and left smoke with lot of dust from mud road. They ran after motorcycle as far they could. He was muscular, sported a beard and was dressed neatly. Motorcycle leaned to sideways  in bend and then disappeared along with the hill road. Kids were impressed with rider's ability, style and macho.

They saw the motorcycle for the first time in their life.

They told this to father who said he was the new doctor who recently opened his shop in Naugaonkhal, 2 kilo meters uphill from their home in Pankhet. Doctor and their father became friends few days ago.

One evening, doctor came to their home in motorcycle. Kids were extremely happy to the motorcycle home. They tried to climb up the motorcycle. Doctor uncle asked them to be careful and then took them on joy ride for a few kilo meters. Kids feared the speed so to avoid the fall from motorcycle they caught each other and wind appeared double the speed so they had to close their eyes. It was a totally new and different experience for them.

Doctor uncle took tea and biscuits as he and Father had some chit chat. After some time, doctor uncle gave key of motorcycle to father and went to nearby village on foot a few days.  Kids again climbed up the motor cycle; Pappu tried to read “Yezdi” on its fuel tank, as they played with it entire evening.

Before dinner Mother said that motor cycle would be very expensive so to avoid the mist, it was better to keep it inside the veranda. Father didn’t know how to ride a motor cycle. He unlocked the motorcycle and pulled it without starting the engine. Kids pushed it from the back. They almost reached the veranda but there were 2 steps between the front yard and veranda. Father was able to pull front wheel up but he could not pull the second wheel up the stairs. There was no else around for few kilo meters. He asked Mother to help them. Mother and kids pushed the motorbike as father tried to pull in from the front. Motorcycle reached the veranda but with a small jerk it lost the balance and fell on the other side of father. With a heavy clonk sound, Pappu was pulled with motorcycle and fell on top of it. Out of fear, Sanju ran inside and Bholu cried with all of his might.

Father helped Pappu get up. Mother had tears in her eyes as she hugged Pappu. He wasn’t hurt. She asked everyone to leave the motorcycle as it was.

They went on for dinner. Mother’s protective affection toward her kids was on display. She cried during whole dinner. Father consoled her. Sanju laughed, Bholu tried to avoid food blaming spices. And more than food, Pappu enjoyed extra care and love.

After dinner, as the kids stood away, father lifted the motorbike with help of mother and put in on the stand. Motorcycle also didn’t get any scratch. But there was big crack on cemented floor of veranda.

Interview Preparation: What makes you uncomfortable? Sample 2 – Mid Level

I was not comfortable when my team members used to make mistakes. I was kind of perfectionist who wanted others also to be perfectionist. I was very frank and did not like people doing things in wrong way. I realised that I was imposing this habit to others. Then I realised that word is not made of machines but people. People do things differently and may make mistakes.

I am still a perfectionist but I do not impose things on others. Even if there is urge from inside. I try to control it and do not take immediate actions. In long terms I think of ways how team can learn without me monitoring them.

07 Cricket fight: True story from our childhood

Cricket fight: True story from our childhood

Few years after 1983 world cup win of Indian cricket team, cricket was becoming popular in villages. On their demand, Father bought a cricket bat for Pappu, Sanju Bholu in Jakholi block of then Tehri district of Uttarakhand.

In summer evenings, they used to play cricket in the small playground in-front of the office building. They were joined by some five-six children from the village. They used to melt plastic on fire and make ball out of it at home. Everyone used to get one over to bowl and one over to bat without any counting of runs.

One day a smartly dressed kid came along with the village children. They said he came there temporary from a big city of Dehradun. He taught the rules of game to children. Everyone liked his style of play. It was almost impossible for anyone to clean bold him. He used to hit every ball when batting and took minimum one wicket in every over when bowling. He was a perfect all-rounder. Someone said he used to go for cricket coaching in Dehradun.

He made two teams, two captains and an umpire. He collected one Rupee from each child for cricket ball and brought some good quality balls. Evening play started becoming regular and kids started learning cricket at a faster rate than earlier. After a month, he suddenly stopped coming. Village children said that he went back to city and will now come next year.

Even without that kid, cricket went on every evening. Kids had already learned many things from him. They promised to each other that they will continue to play in the same fashion and the enthusiasm.

One day Pappu was batting and a village kid Monu was umpire, he was little elder than Pappu. Pappu hit the ball and ran on the pitch for runs. Fielder caught the ball threw the ball to the wickets. Wickets fell but Pappu claimed that he had already reached the crease. But Monu said otherwise and declared Pappu run out.

Both of them started giving opinions in their own favour. They suddenly started becoming aggressive. Their passionate discussion turned into a heated argument and in no-time they had a physical scuffle. Bat fell down from Pappu hand as Monu over powered him. Bholu went in to help Pappu while some village kids helped Monu. Some Kids from village and Sanju tried to pacify them but in vain. There was a free for all brawl between village kids and Pappu, Bholu.

Sanju watched things going out of hand quietly as he saw number of kids from village were certainly higher and all of them were well built. He couldn’t resist more. He went toward the bat, lifted it and struck Monu’s head with all of his might.

Monu’s hands went up, he covered his head with his palms and sat on field screaming in pain.

Fight stopped.

Everyone ran to check on Monu. One old man who were walking there also came in and scolded everyone.

Pappus started toward home.

Monu had a big bump on his head. With acute discomfort, he walked toward his village with the help of others.
