07 Cricket fight: True story from our childhood

Cricket fight: True story from our childhood

Few years after 1983 world cup win of Indian cricket team, cricket was becoming popular in villages. On their demand, Father bought a cricket bat for Pappu, Sanju Bholu in Jakholi block of then Tehri district of Uttarakhand.

In summer evenings, they used to play cricket in the small playground in-front of the office building. They were joined by some five-six children from the village. They used to melt plastic on fire and make ball out of it at home. Everyone used to get one over to bowl and one over to bat without any counting of runs.

One day a smartly dressed kid came along with the village children. They said he came there temporary from a big city of Dehradun. He taught the rules of game to children. Everyone liked his style of play. It was almost impossible for anyone to clean bold him. He used to hit every ball when batting and took minimum one wicket in every over when bowling. He was a perfect all-rounder. Someone said he used to go for cricket coaching in Dehradun.

He made two teams, two captains and an umpire. He collected one Rupee from each child for cricket ball and brought some good quality balls. Evening play started becoming regular and kids started learning cricket at a faster rate than earlier. After a month, he suddenly stopped coming. Village children said that he went back to city and will now come next year.

Even without that kid, cricket went on every evening. Kids had already learned many things from him. They promised to each other that they will continue to play in the same fashion and the enthusiasm.

One day Pappu was batting and a village kid Monu was umpire, he was little elder than Pappu. Pappu hit the ball and ran on the pitch for runs. Fielder caught the ball threw the ball to the wickets. Wickets fell but Pappu claimed that he had already reached the crease. But Monu said otherwise and declared Pappu run out.

Both of them started giving opinions in their own favour. They suddenly started becoming aggressive. Their passionate discussion turned into a heated argument and in no-time they had a physical scuffle. Bat fell down from Pappu hand as Monu over powered him. Bholu went in to help Pappu while some village kids helped Monu. Some Kids from village and Sanju tried to pacify them but in vain. There was a free for all brawl between village kids and Pappu, Bholu.

Sanju watched things going out of hand quietly as he saw number of kids from village were certainly higher and all of them were well built. He couldn’t resist more. He went toward the bat, lifted it and struck Monu’s head with all of his might.

Monu’s hands went up, he covered his head with his palms and sat on field screaming in pain.

Fight stopped.

Everyone ran to check on Monu. One old man who were walking there also came in and scolded everyone.

Pappus started toward home.

Monu had a big bump on his head. With acute discomfort, he walked toward his village with the help of others.
