Fear is a great motivator as well as love.
People led by fear
- Respect authority
- Follow the leader
- try to avoid failure
People led by love
- Will not fear failure
- May foster creativity
I believe both are needed for a good leader.
In non-profit organizations which are mostly driven by volunteers- love is biggest asset of a leader. However, I believe that in for-profit organizations where people are working for salary and benefits – fear would play a bigger role.
Niccolo Machiavelli, Italian diplomat and author said in “The Prince” that it is better to be feared than to be loved if can’t be the both”. I believe he was right.
